Description: A growing number of studies give evidence of the risk to human health from the inhalation of ultrafine particles (UFP). These observations raise the question whether air quality standards comparable to those for other fractions of PM - e.g. PM 10 - could be laid down for UFP as well. However, scientific knowledge is not yet sufficient to set a binding limit value. This refers as well to the quantification of health effects and relevant emitters as to the understanding of particle nucleation and accumulation in the atmosphere. Nevertheless it is recommended to agree as soon as possible on common guidelines for monitoring and assessment of UFP in ambient air. By this a basis for future limit values would be established. © 2020, VDI Fachmedien GmBbH & Co. KG Unternehmen fur Fachinformationen. All rights reserved.
