Comment: This is a market activity. Each market represents the consumption mix of a product in a given geography, connecting suppliers with consumers of the same product in the same geographical area. Markets group the producers and also the imports of the product (if relevant) within the same geographical area. They also account for transport to the consumer and for the losses during that process, when relevant. This is the market for 'pitch', in the geography of Switzerland. Pitch is a product of low value and big quantities. That is why it is not sold and transported on big distances and that is why the regional market for Switzerland is created. The transport distances in this market are taken from a model based on statistics on transport of goods in Switzerland (Valsasina, 2016, Default transport data per commodity group for Switzerland, ecoinvent, www.ecoinvent.org). 'pitch' is an organic viscoelastic polymer which can be fossil or non-fossil, derived from petroleum, coal tar or plants. It is mainly used in the construction industry. It is liquid under normal conditions of temperature and pressure. It is modelled as a mix of hydrocarbons. This market is supplied by the following activities with the given share: light fuel oil production, from waste polyethylene, CH: 0.000389438429784251 petroleum refinery operation, CH: 0.999610561570216 generalComment of light fuel oil production, from waste polyethylene (CH): The production of light fuel oil is valid for 1 kg of recycled oil. This process delivers the by-product pitch for energetic use. Plastic waste can be used for oil production. The collection and sorting is assumed to be comparable as for PE recycling. About 0.8 ton of oil is produced out of 1 t of pure PE. The collected and sorted plastic is shredded in a first step. The grinded plastic waste undergoes so-called thermal depol-ymerisation, during which long molecular chains of plastics decompose into short-chain of petroleum hydrocarbons. This oil equals light fuel oil in terms of quality and composition. Besides the oil, gases are generated similar to natural gas. These gases are used for the process heat that is needed for melting, fracking and evaporation. Another by-product is solid residual material that can be further energetically used. For further information see Kägi et al. (2017). Life Cycle Inventories for Swiss Recycling Processes - Part Carbotech: Recycling of Cardboard, Glass, PE, PET, Tinplate generalComment of petroleum refinery operation (CH): Description of all flows of materials and energy due to the throughput of 1kg crude oil in the refinery. The multioutput-process 'crude oil, in refinery' delivers the co-products petrol, unleaded, bitumen, diesel, light fuel oil, heavy fuel oil, kerosene, naphtha, propane/ butane, refinery gas, secondary sulphur and electricity. The impacts of processing are allocated to the different products. This dataset is modeled as a combined production of 8 reference products in ecoinvent version 3. The distribution of the remaining flows over the reference products is based on the original distribution of the flows as described in the ecoinvent report 6-IV "Erdoel", 2007 unless otherwise specified here.
