Description: technologyComment of packaging glass production, white (RoW): Mix of present used technologies in Europe technologyComment of packaging glass production, white (DE, RER w/o CH+DE): Packaging glass is produced in a two stage moulding process with pressing and blowing techniques. The whole process is fully automatic and consists of five different stages: 1. Production of a molten glass piece (gob) with correct weight and temperature. 2. Forming of the primary shape in a first mould (blank mould) with compressed air pressure 3. Transfer to the final mould (finish mould) 4. Bringing the shaping process to an end by blowing the container with compressed air until the shape of the final mould 5. Post forming processes The melting process is the central one. As the first glass forming material, sand, has a very high melting point. Soda as a fluxing agent is used to reduce the melting temperature. When heating soda, this is decomposed into sodium oxide Na2O, the actual fluxing agent, and into carbon dioxide that is released. Metal oxides in form of limestone (CaCO3 that decomposes to CaO), dolomite (-> Ca- and Mg-Oxides), feldspar are used as stabilizators and therefore to improve the hardness and chemical resistance of glass. For white glass decolouring agents are added. technologyComment of packaging glass production, white (CH): Technology used by Vetropack in its different glass production sites technologyComment of packaging glass production, white, without cullet (GLO): Mix of present used technologies in Europe

Comment: This is a market activity. Each market represents the consumption mix of a product in a given geography, connecting suppliers with consumers of the same product in the same geographical area. Markets group the producers and also the imports of the product (if relevant) within the same geographical area. They also account for transport to the consumer and for the losses during that process, when relevant. This is the market for 'packaging glass, white', in the Global geography. Transport from producers to consumers of this product in the geography covered by the market is included. This product is a white glass that is used as a packaging material. Its production can be of virgin input materials or a mix of primary and secondary raw materials. This market is supplied by the following activities with the given share: packaging glass production, white, without cullet, GLO: 9.99999000001e-07 packaging glass production, white, CH: 0.00964555997469319 packaging glass production, white, DE: 0.0886075063292025 packaging glass production, white, RER w/o CH+DE: 0.27020638802146 packaging glass production, white, RoW: 0.631539545675644 generalComment of packaging glass production, white (RoW): A production site with a sorting capacity of 100 kt per year and a total life span of 50 a is assumed. Dataset is extrapolated from European data. generalComment of packaging glass production, white (DE): This dataset represents the production of 1 kg of white packaging glass from a mix of primary and secondary raw materials. Material and energy inputs as well as water consumption, emissions, and waste production are based on literature sources. Transport is an estimation based on a Swiss production site. Infrastructure is an estimation based on average European packaging glass factories. [This dataset was already contained in the ecoinvent database version 2. It was not individually updated during the transfer to ecoinvent version 3. Life Cycle Impact Assessment results may still have changed, as they are affected by changes in the supply chain, i.e. in other datasets. This dataset was generated following the ecoinvent quality guidelines for version 2. It may have been subject to central changes described in the ecoinvent version 3 change report (http://www.ecoinvent.org/database/ecoinvent-version-3/reports-of-changes/), and the results of the central updates were reviewed extensively. The changes added e.g. consistent water flows and other information throughout the database. The documentation of this dataset can be found in the ecoinvent reports of version 2, which are still available via the ecoinvent website. The change report linked above covers all central changes that were made during the conversion process.] CO2 emissions have been recalculated from the carbon content in raw materials and fuels. generalComment of packaging glass production, white (RER w/o CH+DE): This dataset represents the production of 1 kg of white packaging glass from a mix of primary and secondary raw materials. This datasets represents a marginal additional production without cullet.
