Comment: This is a market activity. Each market represents the consumption mix of a product in a given geography, connecting suppliers with consumers of the same product in the same geographical area. Markets group the producers and also the imports of the product (if relevant) within the same geographical area. They also account for transport to the consumer and for the losses during that process, when relevant. This dataset is a consumption mix, representing the supply of ''potash salt'' from activities that produce it, to activities that consume it within the geography of this dataset, Europe. If 1 kg of this 'potash salt' is used as fertiliser, it is equivalent to circa 0.1 kg of Potassium as K2O. The dataset considers transportation from the producer to the consumer of this product, transportation distances are based on default transport distances for markets (found in file 'Default Transport Assumptions' at https://www.ecoinvent.org/support/documents-and-files/documents-and-files.html). 'Potash salt' is an inorganic substance. It is solid in normal conditions of temperature and pressure. Based on EU regulations (REGULATION (EU) 2019/1009), if this substance would be used as fertiliser, it could be labelled as N-P-K of: (0-0-8). This market is supplied by the following activities with the given share: potash salt production, RER: 1.0 generalComment of potash salt production (RER): This dataset represents the production of 1 kg of potash salt, with 10% K2O, at the mine. Commercial potash deposits come originally from evaporite deposits and are often buried deep below the earth's surface. Potash ores are rich in potassium chloride (KCl), sodium chloride (NaCl) and other salts and clays, and are obtained by conventional shaft mining with the extracted ore ground into a powder. Other methods include dissolution mining and evaporation methods from brines. In the evaporation method, hot water is injected into the potash which is dissolved and then pumped to the surface where it is concentrated by solar induced evaporation. Amine reagents are then added to either the mined or evaporated solutions. In this dataset, shaft mining technology is assumed. Potash salt is used as potassium (K) containing fertiliser. Data on ore extraction and fuel used where collected from Fertilizers Europe. Infrastructure were assumed similar to those of dolomite production as per Althaus et al (2007). The main data source for this dataset is Fertilizers Europe (2014), complemented by Althaus et al (2007). References: Fertilizers Europe (2014): Average Emissions Year 2011.
