Description: The hazel dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius) was a little-studied small mammal for a long period. Public awareness about it has changed since its inclusion in Annex IV of the Habitats Directive by the European Union (Council Directive 92/43/EEC of 21 May 1992 on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora). Our knowledge about the hazel dormouse is therefore now much better than 30 years ago (Juškaitis & Büchner 2013).
