Description: Das Projekt "Strahlungshaushalt am Oberrand der Atmosphaere - ein operationelles Produkt in MIEC" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Kiel, Institut für Meereskunde durchgeführt. Satellite borne radiometers are the only instruments to provide reasonable observations for an estimation of the radiation budget at the top of the atmosphere. Data coverage is, however, a problem. Polar orbiting satellites provide only two observations per day. Thus, a daily mean value can only be derived with an additional model, which describes the diurnal variation. This procedure is performed for example by ERBE (Earth Radiation Budget Experiment). Geostationary satellites can help to solve this problem. We derive a method to estimate the radiation budget components at the top of the atmosphere based on the three-channel observations of METEOSAT (the Climate Data Set, CDS, which is processed 8 times a day, is used). The radiation budget components are going to be a product of MIEC (Meteorological Information Extraction Centre) in ESOC (European Space Operations Centre). The results of this method agree well with those of ERBE for clear sky and in cloudy cases in areas without a distinct diurnal variation of clouds. In areas with such a variation, for example in central equatorial Africa, results agree much better, if one compares the fluxes at these times of the day when observed radiances are available instead of daily mean values (derived with a diurnal model fit by ERBE or 8 observations per day by METEOSAT). Thus, the observations of the geostationary satellite can be a very helpful supplement for the determination of the radiation budget of the earth/atmosphere system.
