From the major ecosystems in the tropics, one of the most threatened is the semi-deciduous tropical forest (Janzen 1988; Vieira and Scariot 2006). It has to be considered that the forest is to such extent fragmented that there is an imminent danger of species extinction (Aronson et al. 2005). From its total remaining area of 1 million km2, about 97 Prozent is in risk from one or more drivers to land degradation. The SDTF provide variety of services as soil formation and conservation, water and climate regulation, nutrient cycling, biodiversity, biological production as timber and non timber forest products, freshwater provision, as well as cultural services as heritage, spiritual, aesthetic and recreational values, among many others. These services support the livelihood of a dense population, which are in their majority under poverty line (Safriel et al. 2005; Miles et al. 2006). With the continue population pressure for utilizing ecosystem services and goods without sustainable management, the SDTF might change to degraded land (Safriel et al. 2005). There is a need to develop strategies for adjusting the changing socio-economic and biophysical situation to an integrated forest management improving livelihoods and forest structure and composition. The purpose of this research is to find out adaptive alternatives for sustainable management of Colombias secondary SDTF, through out the flexible approach of counter-paradigm described in the millennium ecosystem assessment (Safriel et al. 2005), where the interaction of bioclimatic and anthropogenic drivers of change will determine the improvement in the livelihood. It is intended to influence the anthropogenic drivers of ecosystem change though analyzing sustainable economic alternatives of forest utilization, reducing stress on land and water resources by controlling proliferation of livestock and agricultural expansion to forested areas. As a consequence, the rehabilitation of the bioclimatic factors will be facilitated by restoring water and soil resources through conservation of forest land and prevention of changes in the land use, enhancing water availability for crops, livestock and human needs. This research is projected to be developed in Colombia; one of the Countries of South America with lack of knowledge about its natural resources and in need of alternatives for sustainable land use or forest management. In the next paragraphs will be explained more in detail the context and problem of semi-deciduous tropical forest in Colombia.
