Description: Das Projekt "European crayfish as keystone species-linking science, management and economics with sustainable environmental quality" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Technische Universität Braunschweig, Zoologisches Institut durchgeführt. Monitoring European native crayfish populations as indicators of biodiversity is an important tool in environmental management. The proposed network would emphasise knowledge-based management strategies and a common European approach to management techniques; it would also develop the links between researchers, managers and sustainable policies for development through rural agencies and regional programmes such as Interreg, Leader. As the programme is based on fundamental scientific knowledge it would be also have relevance to theme area 2.2.3 Assessing and Conserving Biodiversity. The programme structure comprises two successive phases: 1) the link from science to management, as initiated during a congress in Poitiers (September 2001) and; 2) further links to economic development. Implementation would be through a series of thematic meetings, supporting a closer co-operation between SMEs and research. Freshwater systems are sensitive to human activities both on land and in water, thus biomonitoring of aquatic habitats will give wide scale results. The proposal aims to establish a network of aquatic crayfish researchers and managers, in order to permit linkage of research to management needs and to socio-economic development: 1) Identify trends in land use and consequent water quality in European waters, and their probable impact on biodiversity, as assessed by bioindicators(crayfish are powerful bioindicators for water quality and are also keystone species controlling ecosystems); 2) Discuss ways to harmonise national and regional legislation and improve it at European level; 3) Identify research needed to solve management problems in crayfish survival and habitat and water quality protection; 4) Prepare handbooks on crayfish management solutions - biomonitoring protocols; wise recreational use of native and alien species; 5) Produce publicity (website, documents, videos) aimed at stakeholders and the general public.
