Aquifer recharge with treated water on islands

Description: Das Projekt "Aquifer recharge with treated water on islands" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von I.M.E.S. Gesellschaft für innovative Mess-, Erkundungs- und Sanierungstechnologien durchgeführt. Currently, some European islands, particularly Mediterranean tourist islands, are facing problems with regard to water supply due to the remarkable increases in water consumption, which was mainly based on limited aquifers. These aquifers are very susceptible to depletion, salinization or contamination. The aim of the project is to manage the water resources of the island in a rational and sustainable manner, that both the water supply necessities and the appropriate aquifer management can be compatible. From a technological point of view, the main objective of the project is to develop a treated wastewater quality and use control methodology for further aquifer recharge controlled by a monitoring program in order to improve aquifer management and get resolved tourist islands ' drinking water related problems. The methodological development will be mainly focused on the implementation on the islands to be analysed of a long-term treated water quality and use control, and on an online monitoring programme of the water dispersion through the aquifer As a matter of fact, an integrated management strategy that takes into account seasonal groundwater abstraction rates and associated quality implications, desalinated water quality, water supply demand and quality and the potential for aquifer recharge could provide a very effective solution to current problems of.
