General Information/Objectives: To improve the understanding of the nature of the N. Atlantic winter storm-track, the causes of its variability and the influence on European climate of this variability. Brief Description of the Research Project: The weather systems in the N. Atlantic tend to occur in a longitudinally extended region referred to as a storm-track. This storm-track exhibits significant variability from one year to another and from one decade to another. The weather and, in particular extremes in this weather, over Europe are very dependent on the storm-track. The prediction of storm-track behaviour is probably the greatest goal of seasonal prediction for the European region. Any changes in storm-track behaviour would be probably the most important anthropogenic climate change for Europe. The surface wind and net transfers of heat and water drive the N. Atlantic Ocean so that changes in the storm-track affect the ocean. Conversely it is thought that changes in the sea surface temperature influence the storm-track. In this project increased understanding of these processes and their predictability will be sought through a programme involving sophisticated diagnosis of data from observational analyses and of the output from a range of numerical models. The diagnostics will be designed to show the interannual modes of winter-time variability in the N. Atlantic/European region, and the relationship of the storm-track and European extreme weather to them. They will give evidence of the strength and nature of the influence of sea surface temperature on the atmospheric variability, and of the coupling between the atmosphere and ocean. The models used will range from simpler process-study atmospheric models, through intermediate complexity atmospheric GCMs to full atmospheric and coupled atmosphere-ocean GCMs. Prime Contractor: University of Reading, Department of Meteorology, Horticulture and Agriculture; Reading/UK.
