Biotechnological Approach to Water Quality Improvement in Tropical and Subtropical Areas for Reuse and Rehabilitation of Aquatic Ecosystems

Description: Das Projekt "Biotechnological Approach to Water Quality Improvement in Tropical and Subtropical Areas for Reuse and Rehabilitation of Aquatic Ecosystems" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Köln, Biozentrum, Botanisches Institut durchgeführt. A biotechnological approach of joint basic and applied research will be done to develop strategies and methods to establish semi-natural wetlands for sustainable water management by quality improvements and reuse. A new type of water purification system including swamp vegetation of tropical and subtropical helophytes will be developed. Plant vegetation is selected for effective purification and detoxification capacity to decrease contamination of surface water to nutrient contents of oligotrophical lakes for rehabilitation of eutrophicated lakes, and to a level of contamination which covers the WHO guidelines for tap water.
