Description: Das Projekt "Grundlegende Prozesse der Radionuklidmigration" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Institut für Interdisziplinäre Isotopenforschung e.V. durchgeführt. Aim: Further development and application of the new experimental method Positron Emission Tomography (PET) for spatial resolved studies of advective flow and matrix diffusion in crystalline rock drilled cores. Spatial resolved studies of fluid flow and colloid transport in fractures. Type of work: RTD. Participant: Institut für Interdisziplinäre Isotopenforschung IIF. State of the art before FUNMIG: Non-destructive spatially resolved studies of fluid flow and colloid transport in fractures of crystalline rock drilled cores were not yet executed. Main results (abstract): First time the applicability of PET measurements for non-destructive investigations of the spatial distribution of transport processes of dissolved components and colloids in granitic cores (HRL Äspö, URL Grimsel) is demonstrated. The transport of colloids plays an important role for the radionuclide migration in the potential host rock formations and the long time safety analysis. PET investigations can be used for the validation of the model conceptions. PET data are also the basis for the direct development, validation and parameter estimation of mesoscalic transport models which consider the influence of the real pore and fracture structures. The spatial velocity distribution (channeling) of dissolved components and colloids was measured for the first time in a real fracture using the PET technique. At low flow rates an influence of heterogeneous matrix diffusion processes was detected. Theoretical studies have shown the great influence of the heterogeneous transport distribution in the single fracture on the transport properties of the fracture network. Achievement for PA: A new experimental approach for non-destructive spatially resolved studies of fluid flow and colloid transport in fractured drilled rock cores with PET was developed, new data sets for evaluation of transport models for heterogeneous transport processes in crystalline rocks were aquired.
