Objective: Solid manures from livestock production and other solid organic residue from non-agricultural sources are potentially useful sources of plant nutrients, although at present, they are seriously under-utilised in favour of inorganic fertilisers. This wastes a considerable resource and also leads to additional, avoidable, environmental burdens. In the future, the problems of disposal of organic solids are likely to increase for instance, it is expected that more farm animals will be kept on deeI litter or straw to improve their welfare. The utilisation of organic solids is not without some difficulties. For example there are reasonable concerns about food safety arising from the land application of certain non agricultural organic solids. Non-food crop farming systems need to be considered as alternative safe sinks for some materials. Hence, research is needed to facilitate the attainment of a high nutrient efficiency from solid organic residues whilst minimising the risks of environmental pollution and protecting the long term fertility soils. At present, there are no effective international arrangements in place to ensure proper coordination of this activity. Hence, the overall objective of this Concerted Action is to improve the exchange and dissemination of information concerning the utilisation of solid organic residues in agriculture. Within this framework, the specific objectives are as follows: - to review of the current approaches to utilisation of organic solids throughout Europe; - to exchange experience on technical, environmental and economic aspects; - to identify the constraints which prevent more effective utilisation of organic solids, and to specify the technological developments needed to ease some of these constraints and to enable alternative utilisation strategies; - to define a future international research strategy which will facilitate better utilisation of organic solids. Thirteen participants are involved, contributing expertise in topics such as: sources and quantities of organic solids; sampling and processing; accurate spreading on crops crop response and environmental implications Four meetings are planned over a period of two years (1998-99) each reporting on a particular aspect on the problem: current practice; research review; constraints on recycling and future research strategies The reports for the first three meetings will be consolidated and updated in the final report which will be structured for widespread dissemination. Prime Contactor: Silsoe Research Institute, Biochemical Engineering Group; Bedford.
