Development of an Efficient Drinking Water Disinfection System for Rural Areas in Vietnam powered by Wind Energy (DisinVieW)

Description: Das Projekt "Development of an Efficient Drinking Water Disinfection System for Rural Areas in Vietnam powered by Wind Energy (DisinVieW)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Technische Universität Dresden, Institut für Wasserchemie, Professur für Hydrochemie und Wassertechnologie durchgeführt. In Vietnam, as well in other emerging and developing countries, there are considerable problems to realize a safe drinking water supply in rural areas. Such regions are characterized by insufficient infrastructure, e.g. there are often no drinking water connection, no wastewater treatment and an unreliable energy supply. As a main problem in water quality, the available surface water is often polluted with germs / coliforms. For an efficient drinking water treatment/disinfection at present and in the medium-term, the needed equipment and requirements for a comprehensive improvement of water quality are not available (e.g., missing chemicals, financial resources, energy capacities). With regard to germ load problem, there are additional difficulties due to microbial recontamination, as well as biofilm formation during water storage at the given climate conditions. Within the scheduled project, a concept for an improvement of drinking water supply for such rural areas, in consideration of energy demand and cost efficiency will be developed and proved at a selected rural site. The intended techniques should be oriented towards a decentralized treatment, low energy demand and low costs. To solve the described problems, a simple innovative approach of a treatment technology in combination with small-scale wind energy systems will be established. Within our research project, the two established techniques, UV irradiation and electrochemical treatment, will be targeted, because they are generally suitable for safe disinfection, comparatively inexpensive, they need relatively low-maintenance, and can be technically easily realized.
