Description: Das Projekt "European environmental information services" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Karlsruhe (TH), Forschungszentrum Informatik, Forschungsbereich Datenbanksysteme durchgeführt. Objective: The EEIS project aims to provide a bridge between the European Environment and Remote Sensing communities. To do so, it will link two Information Systems developed within the frame of European initiatives: the Catalogue of Data Sources (CDS) in the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the Enabling Services (ES) in the Centre for Earth Observation (CEO). General Information: The CDS is a locator system designed to find information resources relevant for the Work Programme of the EEA, such as datasets, documents/projects and organisations, for achieving significant improvement in Europe's environment. In a complementary way, CEO's goal is to support the use of satellite data and products, from which publications and higher level documents can be derived later. CEO therefore expends a major effort on the Catalogue Interoperability Protocol (CIP) to connect Catalogues, containing both space and non-space data. The interoperability brought by EEIS will enable, for instance, users of the Environment community to determine which remote sensing data sets are effectively available for their impact studies, or remote sensing users to assess the potential usefulness of some images for environmental applications. EEIS relies upon interoperability standards like CIP and on existing components of the ES and CDS systems. It implements the most recent advances in Information Technology such as World Wide Web (WWW) and JAVA. The results of the project will be a demonstrator of the EEIS system, user requirements consolidated by the feedback of a large sample of users, an increased awareness by both user communities of the type of information available and components which are reusable for operational systems. Major Validation Sites: Joint Research Centre - Space Application Institute, Ispra, IT; Niedersächsisches Umweltministerium, Hannover, DE. Users: Core users of EEA/CDS and CEO/ES are involved in the project, for example: CEO/ES Development Team, Nansen Ice centre (Norway), UK Environmental. Agency, Danish Meteorological Institute, Mediterranean Forest Ecosystem (Greece), EEA/Environment Topic Center (Sweden), other partners of the European Environment Information and Observation Network (EIONET), National Resources Centres. Approach. CIP is an advanced Z39.50 V. 3.0 based protocol designed for spatial search. The Z39.50 profile - BIB is widely accepted for the access to all kinds of documents. Both these protocols insure that different levels of information can be exchanged. Users will access EEIS services with standard WWW clients. Expected Benefits. To improve the use of the taxes paid by the citizen in avoiding double development within the European Union (EU); to co-ordinate ongoing work within the EU; to enhance environmental studies and awareness by improving access to environmental and Earth Observation (EO) data...
