Description: Das Projekt "Energie als Schlüsselelement eines Integrierten Klimaschutzkonzeptes für die Stadtregieon Gauteng, Südafrika" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg, Institut für Abwasserwirtschaft und Gewässerschutz B-2 durchgeführt. Energy and climate change related questions are seen as key challenges in South Africa as well as in Germany. Cities play a crucial role in these areas as centres of intense energy use, technology implementation and intellectual capacities. In the pre-phase of the EnerKey project the key players in the energy and climate change area of research, cities administrations and implementing agents (business and NGO) were brought together and developed a consensus that progress in the sustainability of the City Region of Gauteng, comprising among others the three metropoles Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane (JET-cities), see the need to be activated by a collaborative, integrative and interdisciplinary approach. For this objective a considerable network and competence cluster of South African and German cities, research institutes, companies, NGO and organisations was put together with strong political support. It was agreed upon a common strategy to develop energy and climate efficient structures in the City Region of Gauteng. Objectives and framework: The main aim of the EnerKey project is to develop and apply an effective implementation concept for a sustainable and effective energy and climate protection structure in the City Region of Gauteng, South Africa. This shall be achieved by: - a strategic collaboration of research institutes, JET city administrations and implementing agents of South Africa and Germany, - the development and use of adapted and adequate decision support tools, and - the implementation, monitoring and iterative improvement of pilot projects and applications. The potentials and impact of innovative measures and technologies shall be evaluated, implemented and improved through iterative project cycles. It is the ambition of the project that a high level of effectiveness of this concept can be achieved by making use of advanced decision supporting tools and models. These instruments, where the energy and climate change related data are assessed, analysed and monitored and the suitability and effectiveness of measures and technology implementation can be evaluated, shall be designed and combined in a modular and integrated way. Thus the complexity and the interdependencies of the system are represented and can be mastered to develop robust and effective energy- and climate-efficient strategies. Within the project such tools and models are adapted, developed and optimised to adequately meet the needs of the region and the requirements of a sustainable development. The proposed measures shall be implemented in exemplary case studies together with the municipalities and other relevant implementing agents (i.e. NGO). In this way efficient and adequate measures and a realistic pathway to achieve the energy and climate related aims of the City region of Gauteng shall be achieved. Both pathways, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the urban area and the adaptation to climate change are covered within the project. (...)
