Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Universität für Bodenkultur Wien, Institut für Waldökologie.ANN-ETFRN / Tropical Research Network Austria ist eine Serviceeinrichtung des BMBWK zur Vernetzung der österreichischen Tropenforschungsgemeinde im Umweltbereich. ANN-ETFRN agiert dabei als aktiver Partner in zwei Netzwerken - einerseits im Österreichischen Netzwerk Umweltforschung (ÖNUF) als Netzknoten ANN-ETFRN / Tropical Research Network Austria und parallel dazu als National Focal Point im Europäischen Forschungsnetzwerk European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN). Das ÖNUF (http://nuf.boku.ac.at ) ist ein ' vom BMBWK initiiertes ' innovatives Instrument, welches gezielt die Kooperations- und Forschungsaktivitäten österreichischer Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschafter auf internationaler Ebene unterstützt. Das ÖNUF widmet sich forschungs- und gesellschaftspolitisch wichtigen Wissenschaftsfeldern mit Umweltbezug und sieht sich als strategischer Partner für Wissenschaftler und Studenten, Forschungsmanager und Ressorts aus dem Bereich der Umweltpolitik. ETFRN (http://www.etfrn.org/etfrn/ ) nennt als übergeordnetes Ziel die Sicherung des Beitrages der europäischen Tropenwaldforschung zur Erhaltung und zum nachhaltigen Management von Wäldern und Waldprodukten in den Tropen, Subtropen und im mediterranen Raum. ETFRN ist ein effizienter europäischer Mechanismus, der Dialog und Informationsaustausch zum Thema Tropenwaldforschung fördert. Aus fast zehnjähriger Erfahrung haben sich folgende Prioritäten herauskristallisiert: a) Verbesserte Kohärenz und Koordination der europäischen Tropenwaldforschung; b)Verstärkte Zusammenarbeit mit Forschern aus Ländern des Südens; c)Verbesserter Dialog zwischen Forschern, Politikern, Waldmanagern und anderen den Wald beeinflussende oder von ihm beeinflusste Personen und Personengruppen. Der österreichische Netzknoten ANN-ETFRN (Austrian National Node - European Tropical Forest Research Network)/ Tropical Research Network Austria folgt diesen Zielsetzungen und unterstützt die österreichische Forschergemeinde im Bereich Tropenforschung durch verschiedene Servicefunktionen. Da Österreich nicht über die gleiche Tradition in diesem Bereich verfügt wie ehemalige Kolonialländer, mangelt es an Strukturen und großen Organisationen, die diesen wichtigen Forschungsbereich unterstützen würden. Der Netzknoten ANN-ETFRN / Tropical Research Network Austria kann sich als Integrationsstelle verschiedenster Bereiche mit gleichen Interessen zu einer aktiven Plattform für Forscher, Organisationen und Studenten weiterentwickeln.

  Description: The focal point ANN-ETFRN / Tropical Research Network Austria exists since 1993 at the Institute for Forest Ecology at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Vienna. Initially it fulfilled only the function of a national node of ETFRN (European Tropical Forest Research Network). Since 1996 ANN-ETFRN is also a focal point of the Austrian Network for Environmental Research, initiated and funded by the Austrian Ministry of Science and Transport (now Ministry for Education, Science and Culture). The Austrian Network for Environmental Research (http://nuf.boku.ac.at ) is intended to support the internationalisation of Austrian environmental research. Main objective of the Austrian Network for environmental research is the promotion of international research activities and the support of environmental scientists. The network functions as an interdisciplinary think-tank for developing future-oriented concepts and international research co-operations. The network regards itself as a partner for national and international scientists, students, research managers, policy makers and organisations involved in research co-ordination and funding at national and international level. ETFRN (http://www.etfrn.org/etfrn/) is a forum for communication between European organisations, researchers, EU institutions and others concerned with (sub-)tropical forest research. The ETFRN Network seeks to promote the involvement of European research expertise towards the conservation and wise use of forests and woodlands in tropical and subtropical countries. The ETFRN Coordination Unit is funded by the Directorate General Research of the European Commission under the INCO (International Cooperation) programme. Office space and general support for the Coordination Unit is provided by the Tropenbos Foundation in the Netherlands. The network has participants in 16 European countries, including Norway, Switzerland, and all European Union member states, except Luxemburg. There is an ETFRN focal point (national node) in each of these countries. ANN-ETFRN supports the objectives of ETFRN and the Austrian research community in tropical forest research.
