Description: Das Projekt "ASPEN: Luft-Meer-Wellen-Prozesse in Klimawandel-Modellen" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von GKSS-Forschungszentrum Geesthacht, Institut für Gewässerphysik durchgeführt. The main objectives of this proposal are to: 1) Complete development of and test wind-wave coupling models based on rapid distortion theory (see Section 2.2.1). Specifically, effects of wave three-dimensionality, waves travelling faster than the wind, and waves travelling against the wind, will be examined. 2) Complete development of and test turbulence-centered parameterizations for the scalar fluxes at the air-sea interface (see Section 2.2.2). In particular, efforts will be directed to relating the fluxes to the high wave-number tail of the wave spectrum. 3) Validate the models developed, particularly with regard to wind-wave coupling, using North Sea WAVEC buoy data and ERS altimeter and SAR data. To this end, a 2D adjoint WAM model for the North Sea region will be used. 4) Assess proposed models for the gas exchange coefficients against field experiments. 5) Implement the new coupling models in ECAWOM (coupled atmosphere wave ocean model). 6) Perform a number of numerical experiments with ECAWOM using the improved models, and compare the results with models that do not incorporate wave dependent models. 7) Assess physical mechanisms that lead to impact of wave-related processes on atmospheric circulations, such as cyclonic storms.
