As the operator of the landfill Nattheim, the administrative waste management office of Heidenheim county wants to install a new, innovative operative procedure on basis of SBR-technology for a better cost-effective landfill leachate water treatment. The abbreviation SBR stands for sequencing batch reactor, and means that the filtration of waste water takes place in a periodically time (sequencing) and in one, discontinuously operating reservoir. The hydraulic flexible technology is energetic favourable and results so in the minimization of the operating costs. Through the intended combination of biological basic cleaning and extensive cleansing through adsorption on activated carbon in a reactor, an additional cost-saving is also expected. Pre-tests in the area of semi-technical measure showed that during high capacity periods activated carbon is loaded with COD- and AOX-compounds; while during low capacity periods the microorganisms reach back to the chemical substances in the service reservoir. This way, the activated carbon is being regenerated. Although, no great technical references exist for the SBR-technology, Heidenheim county decided to use the SBR-technology, for the first time in Europe, as a pre-treatment of landfill leachate water. This happens in form of a pilot project. The expectancy is the result of a remarkable drop-down of the landfill leachate water filtration costs. A comparison of all submitted offers showed that with a successful use working costs of about 9 DM/m3 could be reduced to ca 5 DM/m3. This causes a minimization of about 40 per cent. Not taking into account the cost saving through the biological regeneration of the activated carbon. How much further this potential would lead in terms of cost saving still remains, since the long-term behavior of the activated carbon sludge mixture is unknown. In fact, the results are most definitely of great interest for all members of the EU.
