Description: Das Projekt "Schwermetalltoxizitaet bei mykorrhizalen Fichtensaemlingen" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Göttingen, Fakultät für Forstwissenschaften und Waldökologie, Forstbotanisches Institut durchgeführt. Objective: To generate scientific information in order to elucidate the interference of air pollution with key physiological processes in the forest trees. General information: heavy metal toxicity in combination with soil acidification is accepted to be a causative agent in forest decline. The proposed research will investigate the effects of heavy metals on the degree of mycorrhization of the seedlings, and the degree to which mycorrhization alters the tolerance of seedlings to heavy metals will be assessed. These studies will be combined with varying nitrogen sources, as these may modify plant reactions. The heavy metals used, will be those which are estimated to make the most significant contribution to forest decline Hg and Tl (from coal burning) Pb (automobile exhaust) and Cd. The investigation will use picae abies seedlings grown in aseptic culture, and mycorrhizal fungi isolated from healthy and declining tree stands. All work will be carried out in artificial soil solutions with environmental relevant levels of heavy metals and nitrogen used. Mineral contents of the seedlings and mycorrhizae will be estimated by AAS, and their distribution by electron microprobe analysis. The distribution of minerals in root and mycorrhiza grown under controlled conditions will be compared to those of roots collected from healthy and declining tree stands.
