Description: Objective: The aim of the project is to increase the genetic variability of the cultivated lupin species. Crosses between low yielding cultivated species and a wild form with a high amount of pods per plant shall be carried out to develop a new high yielding cultivar. After determining the crossing barriers it shall be tried to overcome them by the right environmental conditions. General Information: Crosses were made under controlled environmental conditions either in the greenhouse or in phytochambers. In additions, some microscopical work was done to determine the crossing barriers. Achievements: Some first steps have been made to cross barriers limiting lupin as a successful protein crop in agriculture. As a main problem incompatibility between several lupin species has been tackled. As a first step some crossing barriers have been located, but further selection to improve fertility and other yield characteristics is required.
