General Information: A heliostat is a movable mirror which tracks the sun as it crosses the sky, thus constantly reflecting direct sunlight to any desired location within the building by means of other fixed mirrors. Due to high engineering and installation costs and due to the lack of appropriate and supplementary artificial lighting systems, current heliostats are suitable to date only for effect illumination. Furthermore, no appropriate system components are yet available on the market which are able to distribute the incoming sunlight according to indoor lighting requirements. The main goal of the research project is to develop the basics of an economic and energy saving heliostat technology for room illumination (called 'Sun Lighting System') by means of direct sunlight combined with artificial light which has widespread application. This Sun Lighting System consists of three main parts: the movable heliostat, distribution system and a supplementary artificial light system for substituting the sun if absent (solar simulator). The RTD work aims to improve the heliostat itself (reduction of investment costs and power consumption), to combine the heliostat with an efficient light distribution system (develop new components) and to integrate a solar simulator. This technology uses renewable energy instead of high quality electric al energy, furthermore the environmental and living quality is strongly increased. Today's market comprises approx. 20 heliostats (1.5 MECU/year) in Europe , the expected short term turnover stimulated by this project is approx. 250 ME CU/year. On a long-term basis the estimated market potential for Sun Lighting Systems is approx. 2000 MECU/year. The preparation of this proposal was funded by an Exploratory Award which included a Research Feasibility Study. This study shows that it is possible, in principle, to use Sun Lighting Systems economically and with energy savings for room illumination instead of conventional artificial lighting.
