Description: Das Projekt "Entwicklung eines Standardverfahrens (Protokolls) fuer die Messung organischer Schadstoffe 'TARS' in Gasen aus Biomasse" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Technische Universität Wien, Institut für Verfahrenstechnik, Brennstofftechnik und Umwelttechnik durchgeführt. Objective: Measurement methods and definitions for organic contaminants ('tars') in biomass gasification based CHP (combined heat and power) systems are numerous and non-uniform. This diversity of methods and definitions forms an obstacle for the introduction of these systems due to problems with comparison of data and with defining clear maximum allowable concentrations. The objective of the project is to remove this obstacle by developing a standard method (Protocol) for measurement of organic contaminants from biomass producer gas which is accepted and used by parties working on biomass gasification and has entered the standardisation procedure at CEN. As acceptance and use by others is considered to be very important, dissemination and internalisation of the Protocol forms an essential part of this project. Description of the work: The Protocol will be development using two earlier draft Protocols (developed on initiative of IEA, EU and US-DoE) and the experience of the project partners. No R and D will be performed in the project, as the project is a Concerted Action. A set of definitions will be made, which are to be used in combination with the Protocol. The Protocol will be optimised by means of a reviewing round undertaken by a Group of Reviewers who form part of this project. In addition, the Protocol will be optimised and tested through R and D activities performed outside, but co-ordinated from inside this project. During this optimisation and testing period, updated versions of the Protocol will be prepared. The Protocol will be disseminated to companies, institutes and universities working in the field of biomass gasification. This will be performed by means of an Internet site, by using Internet mailing lists/discussion groups and by means of papers and presentations at two European Biomass conferences in Tirol and Sevilla. At the end of the project, a workshop will be organised to further disseminate and internalise the Protocol as well as the used set of definitions. Finally, standardisation of the Protocol will be initiated by maintaining contact with, and providing data to, a CEN secretariat to be set-up after the start of this project. Expected results and exploitation plans: Expected results are: - The Protocol itself in draft and in a final version. It will consist of a description of necessary equipment and of procedures for sampling-, post-sampling and analysis to measure organic contaminants at all relevant conditions (0-900 Degree of Celsius; 0.9-60 bars) and concentrations (1 mg/m3n - 100 g/m3n). The Protocol will also include a measurement method for particles; - Co-ordination of R and D performed outside this Concerted Action project. Results of this R and D will answer technical questions to rise during the Protocol development. Prime Contractor: Netherlands Energy Research Foundation, Fuels, Conversion and Environment, Business Unit; Petten.
