Description: Das Projekt "Multi buslorry with multiple use goods and passenger transport" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) AöR durchgeführt. Objective: - Reduction of the investment costs for the service by joint use of vehicles (public transport/commerce) or by joint service of goods transport (express/parcel delivery) and public transport in greater urban areas as well as in rural areas. - Reduction of both fuel and emissions by the use of: - alternative engines powered by natural gas - CNG - small vehicles instead of large ones - avoidance of trips by joint service. - Innovation: joint use of a vehicle for passenger and goods transport, usage of smaller and fewer vehicle thus energy saving in the transport sector. General Information: The MULI project is a demonstration project which will be carried out by transport operators of Berlin and Trollhättan resp. Alvsborg region. The MULI bus lorry is a medium sized vehicle for multiple use. It can be used for passenger transport, for goods transport and for both passenger and goods transport at the same time. Thus the MULI bus lorry could be the optimum vehicle for many different transport situations. In urban areas the MULI bus lorry can be used for passenger transport in the public transport system during periods of light traffic, when there is a need for smaller vehicles, or as an extra bus during rush hours. The availability of the vehicle will be very high in the so called 'Switched mode'. In rural areas, where the basis for passenger and goods transport is limited, the vehicle can be used for combined passenger and goods transport, the so called 'Shared mode'. Using the MULI bus lorry, a large proportion of the transportation of both passengers and goods can be carried out with smaller and fewer vehicles. Some of the MULI bus lorries will be equipped with a gas engine. The new technology for gas engines is likely to be more efficient in vehicles that make many starts and stops during operation. A gas engine gives less severe pollutions and, in addition, gas can be produced locally. The MULI bus lorry concept will also be tested with conventional diesel engines. The objective is to compare the performance of these engines in real traffic conditions with those vehicles with conventional engines. The concept of the MULI bus lorry is an attractive bus, that can accommodate all categories of passengers and is a suitable lorry for transportation of different kinds of goods. This means, that the vehicle will meet all requirements of a bus and be comfortable and safe for the whole range of passengers including school children, people on their way to jobs etc. as well as elderly and disabled persons. The vehicle must meet the mandatory regulations for buses, on and, in addition, gas can be produced locally. Achievements: - The MULI-Bus lorry is in operation since January 1998 in Berlin and Feb. 1998 in Sweden. - The operation experiences in Berlin and Älvsborg show that the operation concepts run without difficulties.
