Description: Das Projekt "Sustainability assessment of the pulp and paper production in China by using Life Cycle Assessment" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Freiburg, Fakultät für Umwelt und natürliche Ressourcen, Professur für Forstbenutzung durchgeführt. As one of the most important economic activities and energy-intensive industry, the pulp and paper industry is recognizing its role in the concept of sustainability development. Chinas pulp and paper industry emerged as the second largest producer of paper products in the world and is playing more important role in the international trade of paper products. The purpose of carrying out this research is to evaluate and assess the sustainability impacts from the Chinese pulp and paper products production in terms of economic, social and environmental sustainability. The entire production chain will be examined, which starts from the raw material extraction in the forest, through pulp and paper manufacturing phase, transportation, product distribution and till the product end use stage. Several specific questions need to be answered: 1) Reviewing the material flow (input and output) throughout the entire production processes of the pulp and paper industry in China 2) Evaluating the sustainability impacts (environmental performance, economic impacts, and social impacts) of different processes along the entire production chain 3) Identifying the potentials for sustainability optimizations The life cycle assessment (LCA) which is also called cradle-to-grave approach will be applied in this study as an analytical tool to assess the overall environmental impact of the pulp and paper industry production process. Economic impacts and social impacts will be also identified based on the case study in a Chinese pulp and paper mill.
