Description: Das Projekt "Umwelt- und Klimaaufzeichnungen aus grosser Hoehe" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Heidelberg, Institut für Umweltphysik durchgeführt. The general objective of this proposal - environmental and climate records from High Elevation Alpine Glaciers (ALPCLIM) - embraces the aquisition, evaluation and validation of climatic relevant ice core records from cold Alpine glaciers along with the prospecting of the potential of these unique archives for climatic studies. This includes the recovering of representative high resolution ice core records from several drill sites in the Monte Rosa and Mont Blanc summit region, partly entering far into the pre-industrial era and generally refering to the following ice core signals: 1) Isotope-temperature changes. 2) Aerosol related species (sulphate, nitrate, ammonium, mineral dust) as well as. 3) Long lived trace gases (methane, carbon monoxide) and combustion aerosol components (black carbon, DOC) not investigated yet in Alpine ice cores. The evaluation of these records is focussed on the assessment of their significance in reflecting net atmospheric changes against the respective variability during the pre-industrial era. This challenge dictates a thorough investigation of glaciological aspects of cold Alpine glaciers in view of their sampling characteristics and climatic evidence for the englacial temperature distribution which is performed by field observation and modelling. Constraining the climatic significance of the climatic ice core proxy records is attempted by decoding the englacial borehole temperature as well as by assimilating long term precipitation and temperature records from relevant instrumental archives. The project is based on teams specialized in glacio-chemistry, environmental isotopes, Alpine glaciology as well as Alpine climatology. The proposed ice core activities are mainly based on recently drilled deep ice cores.
