Description: Das Projekt "Risk assessment of the development of resistance traits of the invasive western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera) against Bt-corn due to the use of alternative host plants" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Department für Nutzpflanzenwissenschaften, Abteilung Agrarentomologie durchgeführt. The use of transgenic maize in integrated pest management approaches requires a resistance management to avoid a rapid selection of resistant insact strains. The Bt maize developed to counter western corn rootworm larval damage expresses the Cry 3Bb1 toxin relatively low doses. This study enquires the possibilities of larvae of D. v. virgifera using alternative host plants and therefore avoiding Bt-toxin for some time during their development. If L1-larvae develop on alternative hosts like nonomcot weeds they may afterwards mov to maize to complete their development to the adult stage when the Bt-toxin is not as effective against older larval stages. This might lead to partially resistant individuals which could help to build a resistant population over time.
