Description: Das Projekt "Minderung von Emissionen fluechtiger organischer Zusammensetzungen durch Einsatz fetthaltiger Saeure-Ester für Metallreinigungsprozesse" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Kooperationsstelle DGB - Gewerkschaften,Hochschulen durchgeführt. The overall goal of the project is to successfully substitute organic solvents as cleaning and degreasing agents with a new cleaning technology in 80 companies in the metal sector. The widely used highly volatile organic solvents will be replaced by non emitting fatty acid esters derived from vegetable oils. The consumption of VOC as cleaning and degreasing agents (445000 t pa) is one of the main sources of synthetic VOC emissions in Europe. The new cleaning technology will be tested in the region of the main proposer - Northern Germany - and in the Netherlands and Austria. The project is structured in three main phases: - Pilot phase, A1: Choice of 16 pilot companies; A2: Introduction of the technology in the 16 pilot companies; A3: Installation of one recycling installation and test of one mobile equipment for SME's. - Optimization phase; A4: Optimizing the application properties of the basic chemicals (esters); A5: Optimizing the properties of the equipment; A6: Testing the recycling and waste material; A7: Optimizing the recycling process; A8: Optimizing the whole process by continuous advice; A9: Introduction of the technology in 64 companies. - Dissemination phase: This consists of demonstration meetings together with the social partners, technical demonstration in companies, four technical manuals will be published and six workshops for different sectors of the metal industry will be organized. Dissemination and optimization of the application and recycling of fatty acid esters as a surface cleaning agent in the metal industry. Innovation of the basic chemicals (esters) and an improved application technology will make it possible to replace conventional VOC-emitting volatile organic solvents and to reduce the investment capital expenditures for technical emission abatement.
