Description: Das Projekt "Factors for economic success of smallholder driven natural resource management: A comparative study of success cases in Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Freiburg, Waldbau-Institut durchgeführt. Since decades, development organizations promoting the concept of community forestry in the expectation to contribute to both: local well being and forest conservation. Also in Central America, countless initiatives trained local forest users in practices for sustainable forest management, organized forest users in associations and tried to explore financially attractive markets for forest products. However, success so far, has been only modest, as the promoted technological-organizational packages suffered from a lack of compatibility to local realities, and the legal and institutional contexts limit profit margins. As a consequence, smallholders don't adopt the proposed management schemes and even the most successful initiatives continue to depend on external support. In this situation, it is worthwhile to profoundly question the local viability of the community forestry approach as currently promoted throughout the region, and critically assess possible alternatives enabling smallholders to effectively use their forest resources. This study assumes that a profound analysis of situations, where smallholders managed to establish production schemes in accordance with their interests and capacities would generate important insights about the requirements for locally viable strategies for the use of forests effectively contributing to the livelihoods of the families. Thus, the study intends to identify and profoundly analyze such 'success' cases of smallholder driven production system in Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica, in accordance with an analytical framework determining the possible factors for success. Based on the findings of this analysis, in a second step, it will assessed if and in how far the identified parameters for success are feasible or could be established to foster the viability of the local use of forests. As a result of this analysis, it will be possible to more realistically assess the potential role of forests for local development.
