Description: Das Projekt "Die Nutzung erneuerbarer Energien bei der Wasserentsalzung" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Trier, European Association for Environmental Management Education - Focal Point Trier -, Europäisches Diplom in Umweltwissenschaften durchgeführt. Water management emerges as a critical problem in modern times. Desalination may prove to be the key technology, if it can provide fresh water in an environmentally friendly and energetically sustainable way. To this end, renewable energy sources are among the most promising options. Efficient production of potable water, in conjunction with electric power, is expected to enhance public acceptability of renewable energy forms and accelerate their integration into the economy and everyday life of society. Fresh water shortage affects a large and widespread number of residential communities as well as various industrial locations. The decentralised demand favours local water production. Thus, a flexible and environmentally friendly technology, within reasonable cost, may provide an ideal solution. The research, with the contribution of case studies, focuses on whether this is a preferable solution for areas where the problem of water shortage is significant and the local conditions allow the use of renewable energy forms, such as wind, solar, tidal, geothermal and on how this solution can be applied, which actors should be involved and how it should be promoted, suggesting the best solution (renewable energy form-desalination process couple), following a through evaluation of the various aspects of several feasible techniques and combinations. The project is focusing on the commercial and financial aspects.
