This project deals with fundamental kinetic investigations of heterogeneous chemistry relevant to stratospheric processes. It has been shown that the atmospheric halogen loading of anthropogenic origin is primarily responsible for the recurrent polar ozone depletions. This project is a concerted effort to obtain a better understanding of both homogeneous and heterogeneous chemical processes of halogen-containing molecules that may not have been taken into account heretofore. Particular emphasis is placed on bromine-containing compounds because of their greater reactivity in laboratory studies of atmospheric chemistry. We have started our investigations with the heterogeneous processing of Cl2O+H2O = HOCl in preparation for the hitherto unknown reaction Br2O+H2O = 2HOBr in the temperature range of 180 to 220 K. We are investigating the relationship between the extent of adsorption of precursor molecules whose importance increases with decreasing temperature and heterogeneous reaction rate of adsorbed molecules whose importance would decrease with decreasing temperature.
