Objective: The objective of this project is to develop appropriate environmentally friendly enzymatic deinking as a solution to deinking difficulties relatd to ink detachment. General Information: Bio-deinking is an alternative to prevailing solutions requiring more chemicals and energy. After identification of these difficulties (responsible paper grades and printing methods), and analysis of their origin (ink composition, nature of bonding between ink and fibre surface), enzymes will be selected, purified and tested at laboratory scale for deinking of wood free and wood containing papers, printed with hard to detach inks. The most promising results will be scaled up by producing larger amounts of the selected enzymes, and by conducting pilot plant deinking in continuous process. The effect of deinking enzymes on paper production rate and paper quality, as well as on water system quality, will be evaluated. Finally full scale mill trials will be performed taking into account the results of the pilot plant trials, to get an overall evaluation of the proposed process. Economic and environmental impacts of the proposed process will be evaluated. Basic research, trials on pilot plant scale and industrial development will be considered in he frame of the present project. The consortium in charge of this project includes all the skills necessary to reach the objectives: four research institutes experienced in enzymology, papermaking (recycling and deinking) and paper properties, an enzyme manufacturer, two papermakers operating deinking plants using wood free and wood containing raw materials. This project will contribute to the development of environmentally friendly technologies: bio-deinking will help to reduce the amount of chemicals used for deinking in the slushing stage. Bio-deinking could also be considered as an alternative to hot dispersing (the most common solution to detach hard to detach ink) and thus contribute to reduce thermal and mechanical energy consumption. Another important consequence will be the reduction of dissolved material (COD), in the effluents.
