Description: Das Projekt "New methods for laying underground pipelines for large district heating systems in urban agglomerations" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Berliner Kraft- und Licht durchgeführt. Objective: The aim of this project is the investigation of new methods to lay pipes for long distance heating lines in an urban area to reduce the high costs. This requires the research and development of new underground pressing methods for pipe laying. Another important part of this project is the first construction of an elastic point of support to reduce the pedestal stress of the long pipe line. Measurement programmes are included in this project to document the results of the tests. General Information: The route selected for the experiment is a section of the underground pipe network situated between Shaft Nr. 6 and the Mierendorfplatz pumping station via Shaft Nr. 7. The section has a length of approximately 1.100 m and crosses from Shaft Nr. 6 the ground below the park of the historical castle of Charlottenburg and below the river Spree to Shaft Nr. 7. From there to the pumping station, it runs below a built-up residential area, including the Osnabrücker and the Tegeler streets. This pipeline section will allow the output of the district heating network of which it is part to be increased by 700 MWh. The basic structure consists of a concrete tunnel of 4.1 m internal diameter which accommodates 4 pipes, one for room heating water supply and one for the supply of water of constant temperature for the heating of sanitory water and air conditioning systems and two for return flows. The construction is done in applying the sinking method for the shafts and the heating method for the tunnel tubes. After completion of the tunnel, the pipes are installed in the interior. The pipe sections are welded to the pipe in the shafts. In the tunnel a rail system is installed on which the pipe is moved forward step by step by the length of the welded pipe sections. The insulation is alreay fitted to the pipe sections. This assembly method allows newly the weldings and the insulation to be inspected before the pipe enters the tunnel. The elastic fixation point of the pipe system inside the tunnel essentially consists of springs attached to the pipe system as well as to the concrete foundation. It is installed in Shaft Nr. 7, i.e. in the middle of the pipeline. The construction of the pipeline will last 28 months. The completion is scheduled for October 1988. Afterwards a measurement and demonstration period of one year will follow. The total cost of the project is DM 43.8 million of which DM 30.6 million for the construction waste, DM 12.7 million for the piping work and 0.5 million for the measurement and demonstration phase. A financial assistance of DM 3.285 million is granted by the EEC. Achievements: On the 16th of March 1987 the dome shield (great head shield) was driven into the structure of the NPM. The construction works in the tunnel were finished by disassembling the four intermediate hydraulic-ram-stations and sealing up the joints of the concrete pipes. The buildings pit of shaft 7 was excavated ti a depth of 22 m and a steel pipe was
