Description: Das Projekt "Landscape ecology and bioenergy" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Forstliche Versuchs- und Forschungsanstalt Baden-Württemberg durchgeführt. This project uses the example of energy wood (biomass) to investigate how human-mediated processes (e.g. wood product markets) affect landscape patterns (e.g forest structure) at the regional scale. Our null hypothesis is that harvest intensity (harvested volume/available volume) is distributed randomly in space. As an alternative, we will test how mapped patterns of harvest intensity in Baden-Württemberg are associated with topography, road density, harvest costs, energy prices, and forest inventory (e.g. tree species composition). Theories from spatial economics (e.g. von Thünen) and previous applications in agriculture and epidemiology provide preliminary model forms to test and adapt to forestry. The resulting general spatial model will then be used to test the sensitivity of estimates for among-and within-stand residual forest structure (e.g diameter distribution, species) to changing harvest intensities. Investigating the spatial link between market variables (e.g. price) and biological ones (e.g. deadwood) is an important step in identifying how human-mediated processes affect the patterns of forested landscapes. Such information is needed, for example, in ecosystems of the interior western United States, where wildfire interacts with forest structure in ways that influence fire severity and effects. Increased knowledge about the spatial relations between energy markets and forest structure can contribute to decisions for meeting land management objectives. Additional information about this project is documented in Joint Venture Agreement No. PNW 07-JV-11261975-331 between the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station (PNW) and the Forest Research Institute of Baden-Württemberg (FVA).
