Digital Registration, Modelling and Analysis of the Würmian Rhein Glacier (Maximum Extent) with GIS

Description: Das Projekt "Digital Registration, Modelling and Analysis of the Würmian Rhein Glacier (Maximum Extent) with GIS" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Zürich, Geographisches Institut durchgeführt. The project aims at the first digital registration, modelling and analyses of the Würmian Rhein Glacier during its maximum extent with GIS and is an initial step towards establishing a general data base for quantitative treatment of Ice Age environments in Switzerland and the Alpine countries. Existing analogue data (maps of reconstructed ice margins, ice surfaces or ground surfaces with/without Holocene sediments) must be digitized where necessary. Information on the 3-D geometry in the entire accumulation and ablation area of one of the best documented Alpine Ice Age glaciers is compiled from various sources, controlled in the field, digitally registered entirely and accurately. Possibilities of parameterizing and analysing Ice Age glaciers regarding climate/environmental reconstructions and ice / water flow modelling are investigated, The high-quality digital data which will be provided can later serve as a basis for the application of various sophisticated flow models and analyses (e.g. using finite elements).
