Foresnab - Sustainable use of forest resources as nano-scale building blocks for functional biocomposites and devices

Description: Das Projekt "Foresnab - Sustainable use of forest resources as nano-scale building blocks for functional biocomposites and devices" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Freiburg, Fakultät für Umwelt und natürliche Ressourcen, Juniorprofessur für Biobasierte Materialwissenschaften durchgeführt. Short project description: The integration of sustainable and biorenewable resources into functional polymer nanocomposites offers high potential for replacement of traditional polymers based on petroleum derivates, and will have an impact on general concerns about global warming, energy supply and recycling. In this research proposal, the polymeric wood constituents including lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose will be converted into nanomaterials that are created by top-down or bottom-up engineering. The integration of renewable nanocomponents in combination with sustainable interface engineering and biopolymer matrixes will allow to create fully bio-renewable polymer nanocomposites with structural or functional properties. The formulation of the nanoscale cellulose materials and the selection of biopolymer matrixes are presented, but the main focus of this research will be put on fundamental fiber-matrix engineering by introducing novel nanoparticles that control adhesive and hydrophobic properties. The organization of cellulose-based materials into target structures will provide materials with good reinforcement and high functionality. This research balances between different engineering disciplines, ranging from materials science to chemistry and mechanical engineering, ranging from nanoscale to microscale data interpretation.
