Description: Das Projekt "RAPID (Radar Amplitude, Phase und interferometrische Bestimmung)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. - Deutsches Fernerkundungsdatenzentrum durchgeführt. The joint proposal RAPID (Radar Amplitude, Phase and Interferometric Detection) gathers nine research groups (seven from Germany, one from Austria, one from Hungaria) with the intention to use not only the ERS SAR amplitude information but also the interferometric possibilities of the mission. Rapid is considered as innovative scientific proposal exploiting ERS data either alone or in synergy with other data for land surface processes and microwave interaction mechanisms, including also climatological purposes. If technically feasible ihe tandem mode of ERS-1 and ERS-2 will be used as well as the synergetic use of ERS data from more than one instrument on ERS-1 or ERS-2. The main reason for a joint proposal is to establish a solid interaction between researchers developing algorithms for new data types from the imaging SAR sensor (i.e. phase information, coherence maps, interferometrtic parameters) and those who apply these data in different regions of Europe, Africa and South America, for different research application purposes and in synergy with different remote sensing and ancillary data. The application will then give feedback in an iterative way to the group developing new software for basic SAR data. The individual proposals have the following main objectives: - to develop prototype software for generating InSAR products and to derivate digital elevation models (DEM) from the SAR system itself in areas with known DEM (i.e. Hungaria) for verification and other areas not covered by DEMs, - to investigate SAR data from ERS-1/2 for longterm regional monitoring in close connection with environmental administrations of Northern Germany and to develop therefore software tools for data merging and change detection of multisensoral and multitemporal ERS data, for the production of coherence maps and integration into a GIS, - to develop a sophisticated processing chain for landuse classification in the area of Baden-Wuerttemberg using complex and interferometric SAR data, such as coherence maps and digital elevation models, including scenes from different orbits, - to extract linear objects from ERS SAR scenes using phase, interferometry and GIS information, - to develop an operational method based on ERS standard and /or interferometric data with the aim of identifying aeolian, fluvial and geohydrological dynamics in hyperarid to semiarid desert environments, - to asses the anthropogene and climatic sea level variations of the Aral Sea and Lake Chad using ERS-1/2 SAR data in combination with other optional sensor data (SIR-C/X-SAR, Landsat, Spot, KFA-1000, dig itized shuttle images), - to evaluate methods for rainforest monitoring in Brazil using ERS-1/2 SAR data, coherence maps and data from the SIR-GX-SAR missions, - to solve the problem of precission matching of dissimilar ascending and descending overlapping of ERS-1/2 SAR images over mountainous areas.
