Description: Das Projekt "Transport, reactions and dynamic of heavy metals in contaminated marine sediments" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Max-Planck-Institut für marine Mikrobiologie durchgeführt. New approaches for the risk assessment of marine sediments polluted by Pb, Cd and Cu will be assessed and expedited by a coherent programme of work. Recent advances in the understanding of carbon and metal reaction pathways in sediments that recognize the importance of their micro heterogeneity will be exploited. Newly developed planar optrodes, electrodes, and gel techniques that can measure the solute and solid concentrations at sub-mm spatial resolution will be applied to sediment mesocosms containing contaminated sediment. The 2D and temporal information on solute and solid structure will be compared with the structure of the microbial community that is responsible for the sediment heterogeneity. These data will provide the basis for the construction of a solute/sediment interaction model that, for the first time, allows a consideration of the processes occurring in three dimensions. This mechanistic base will made available for our end-users.
