Description: Das Projekt "Europaeisches Projekt zu Blitz-Stickoxiden (EULINOX)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR), Institut für Physik der Atmosphäre Oberpfaffenhofen durchgeführt. The general objective of the project is to understand and quantify the contributions from thunderstorm lightning-induced sources of nitrogen oxides (NOx) to the composition of the atmosphere over Europe. New experimental evidence will be used for a re-examination of the lightning NOx production and thus to provide an improved knowledge of the distribution of NOx sources on the European scale. The objective will be addressed by field experiments (including aircraft measurements) and modelling studies both at regional scale (in Southern Germany) and at the scales of Western Europe (Ireland to Poland, Italy to Norway). More specifically, the general objectives of the EULINOX project will be addressed by investigating the following major questions: 1) What ist the lightning distribution within a thunderstorm and how is lightning related to other parameters? 2) What is theNOx concentration field in the vicinity of individual thunderstorms and can one deduce the LNOx (lightning induced NOx) source per flash or per thunderstorm from the observations? 3) What is the 2D distribution of lightning activity and its correlation with satellite, radar, and model analysis data over Europe? 4) What is the NOx concentration field over Europe in summer under convective weather conditions? 5) How important is the LNOx source compared to other (better known) NOx sources with respect to the impact on photochemical ozone production?
