Kaskadennutzung von Miscanthus zur Steigerung der Ressourceneffizienz

Description: Das Projekt "Kaskadennutzung von Miscanthus zur Steigerung der Ressourceneffizienz" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, Institut für Nutzpflanzenwissenschaften und Ressourcenschutz (INRES), Forschungsbereich Nachwachsende Rohstoffe durchgeführt. Miscanthus as a fast growing perennial C4-grass gives high biomass yields which make it a promising multi­ purpose renewable resource for bioeconomy. Furthermore it can act as a tool for ecological services like phytoremediation or to increase biodiversity in agriculture. On one side Miscanthus can be used for direct combustion or for producing bio-fuels. On the other side it can be a feedstock in biorefinery to produce platform chemicals from lignocelluloses. Several material uses like animal litter, growth substrate in horticulture, bio-plastics, composite and insulating or building materials demonstrate the potential of Miscanthus as a raw material for a bio-based industry. Despite these different possible utilizations of Miscanthus industry is focusing on pre-defined single uses. Side products are often considered as dead end products with no further intended use. The same is valid for the product after its primary use. A sustainable bioeconomy strategy should increase resource efficiency to preserve the natural environment. The challenge in this context is to understand as many as possible side and end-of-life products as feedstock for follow-up uses. This can be done by combination of material and energetic uses in cascade utilization pathways. Such an approach could have major economic implications by establishing new market areas organized in supply chain networks. Possible cascade pathways will be shown and how different uses could be combined to increase the resource efficiency.
