Aim of the project CARIBIC is to investigate dynamical and chemical processes in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UT/LS), to date, a region of particular interest (especially in AFO 2000). The current knowledge about the UT/LS region is limited, mainly because of the lack of trace gas and aerosol particle data. A major intention of CARIBIC is to strongly enhance the current data set by adding data of more than 60 trace gas and aerosol parameters from the UT/LS along intercontinental distances and over many years. The data are collected with an automated measurement container filled with instruments which is currently installed in a Boeing 767-ER and after summer 2002 in an Airbus A330-200 (both aircraft from LTU Airways). The IMK is responsible for the ozone measurement during CARIBIC. Ozone is of major interest, inter alia, because it strongly influences the oxidising capacity of the troposphere. In respect to ozone, focal topics within the project are a) ozone production in the UT/LS especially in areas impacted by biomass burning, emissions from large urban centres, and enhanced lightning, b) the role of deep convection on the ozone production, and c) the extra-tropical troposphere - stratosphere exchange. Convection may transport ozone precursors to the upper troposphere where they more efficiently produce ozone than in the boundary layer. IMK provides two instruments for the measurements of ozone: OSCAR, a fast response ozone sensor based on the chemiluminescence reaction of ozone with an organic dye adsorbed on silica gel, and OMCAL, a commercially available instrument adapted for the purposes of the flight conditions that is also used to calibrate OSCAR. With its fast response time of 0.125 s, OSCAR allows to record features down to spatial scales of 30 metres. Within this project, OSCAR is rebuild for the Airbus A330-200. This work includes the construction of a temperature stabilised luminescence reaction cell and the installation of a new (high anode sensitivity, extremely low noise) channel photo-multiplier to enhance the sensitivity and to achieve better signal to noise ratios. A new computer that records the data is constructed, further facilities to faster and better check the instruments and to calibrate them are developed. The data will be compared with other U//LS data sets, in particular the MOZAIC ozone data. Distributions (latitudinal profiles) and seasonal variations of the relation of O3 with CO (as tracer for tropospheric air) in the lowermost stratosphere will be used to derive information on the seasonally varying downward flux of ozone into the troposphere and the flux of tropospheric air into the extra-tropical stratosphere. Comparisons with the nitrogen oxide data simultaneously measured by the DLR (Dr. H Schlager) or with shorter lifted hydrocarbons measured by the MPI-C (Dr. C. Brenninkmeijer) are used to identify and quantify photochemical ozone production by different sources.
