Numerische Studien des Energie- und Wasserkreislaufs in der Ostsee-Region (NEWBALTIC)

Description: Das Projekt "Numerische Studien des Energie- und Wasserkreislaufs in der Ostsee-Region (NEWBALTIC)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von GKSS-Forschungszentrum Geesthacht, Institut für Atmosphärenphysik durchgeführt. Our main goal is the quantification of the energy and water cycle over the catchment area of the Baltic Sea. We will contribute to the atmospheric branch of the energy and water cycle by using a regional scale model (REMO) with a horizontal resolution of 18,5 km x 18.5km. On this grid the model provides for the water cycle: the atmospheric water vapour and liquid water content, as well as the derived fields of precipitation (rain and snow). We will also compute energy budget components (e.g., radiative fluxes, latent and sensible heat fluxes). We will run REMO in short range forecast mode for several periods defined within BALTEX. Target years will be 1986/87, 1992/93 and the months August-October 1995. To get a reliable, i.e., as exact as possible, quantitative representation of the energy and water cycle we will perform the following three steps in this project: i) Validation of REMO against observations; ii) Intercomparison with other atmospheric models; iii) Improvement of physical parametrizations.
