Description: Das Projekt "Ökologische Beobachtungs-Software" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Hochschule Mainz, Institut für Raumbezogene Informations- und Messtechnik durchgeführt. In recent years there has been many ecological coup in Hindu-Kush-Himalayan region - region with one of the most diverse ecosystem, which has put the ecosystem of the region at the verge. The necessity of monitoring the ecosystem was long felt. However, it is difficult to realize in reality as it would require a constant ecological survey by experts to identify patterns of the species occurrence within local spatial and short temporal windows. This is not always possible due to the cost and availability of the experts to collect data round the year. The advancement in crowdsourcing and its implications through the Semantic Web technologies have provided alternatives in managing and monitoring information gathered from non-experts. This pilot project developed a system that validates information collected through non-experts through cross-examining it against the rules formulated by experts. It is an initial and important step behind a prospective broader project in the direction of usage of technical developments in the Semantic Web application. The intention and motivation behind this work is to prepare a background for cooperation with International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and to design a project for eco-monitoring and climate change. This pilot project is first attempt to prove the concept of using semantic technologies in environment and ecological monitoring activities. It will be used to demonstrate the applicability of such a system to include non-experts to gather reliable data. The first version of the prototype was ready to get demonstrated in August. ICIMOD provided the required rules and data to test the system. The system uses inference capabilities within the Semantic Web framework to classify annotated floral species into their rightful categories. We extended the system to include contents from existing SPARQL endpoints of dbpedia through connecting the content from the system to the contents in dbpedia. Dr. Karmacharya presented the outcomes of the project to ICIMOD staff early October 2014. ICIMOD expressed commitments and interests from their side to continue the project.
