Ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis have become widely accepted separation techniques within the last 15 years. The number of industrially relevant applications is very large and reaches from treatment of industrial waste water to the recovery of very valuable products in biotechnology. The current EC market for these membrane techniques is roughly 80 MECU per year. This market could grow enormously, if one significant shortcoming of the current membranes could be overcome. This is the lack of stability against many chemicals (eg organic solvents), particularly at elevated temperatures. The very few chemically and thermally resistant membrane types which are on the market are either too expensive for most applications (ceramic membranes) or their molecular cut-off is too high for many applications. Proposed is to develop low cost solvent and temperature resistant membranes for nanofiltration with molecular cut-offs between 300 and 1000 Dalton. There are two fields of applications for these membranes: a) Treatment of industrial waste water streams which either contain high concentrations of organic solvents or require higher temperature or extreme pH resistance (eg landfill leachates, paint and dye stuff waste waters). b) Treatment of non-aqueous systems. This potentially large application has not yet been explored for lack of suitable membranes.
