Partikeldynamik in aquatischen Systemen: Zweite Untersuchung von Grenzwirkungen in Seen mit Radioisotopen

Description: Das Projekt "Partikeldynamik in aquatischen Systemen: Zweite Untersuchung von Grenzwirkungen in Seen mit Radioisotopen" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universite de Geneve, Institut F.-A. Forel durchgeführt. The objective of the proposed study is to evaluate the pathways and the relative importance of particles from different sources and their role in the scavenging of radionuclides as well as 'particle reactive' contaminants in lakes. Special attention will be paid to the near bottom transport phenomena. To account for the different physical and chemical conditions, we propose to examine these processes in two large sub-alpine lakes: Lake Geneva and Lake Lugano. By carrying out the investigations in two lakes with different redox conditions in deep waters, we expect to deduce the importance of these factors for trace element removal. We propose to use a set of natural and man-made radionuclides (Be-7, Pb-210, Th-234, Cs-137) in an attempt to provide a time scale of transport and the pathways of particles. As analogues for containment removal in aquatic systems, the use of radioisotopic tracers will be of great value in environmental management, conservation and protection.
