Exzellenzcluster 80 (EXC): Ozean der Zukunft

Description: Das Projekt "Exzellenzcluster 80 (EXC): Ozean der Zukunft" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel (GEOMAR), Forschungsbereich 2: Marine Biogeochemie, Forschungseinheit biologische Ozeanographie durchgeführt. Within the last 150 years, sea urchins have progressively become important model organisms in the fields of comparative ontogeny, evolutionary biology, systems biology and marine medicine. Vast amounts of information are accessible on embryonic development and the regulation of gene expression in sea urchin early life stages. The enormous interest in these organisms culminated in the sequencing of the complete genome of the California sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, enabling exciting comparative studies on unifying principles in cellular stress responses and the development of immune systems within the animal kingdom. With a large number of human disease gene orthologs present in the sea urchin genome and recent findings of sea urchin embryonic development being highly sensitive to ocean acidification, we propose to establish this animal model system in Kiel to serve both, groups A1 (Ocean acidification) and B2 (Marine medicine). Initial experiments will focus on identifying stressor induced transcriptome variability, with the primary stressors being temperature and CO2.
