General Information: The aim of this proposed project is to examine how water resources could and should be managed in the face of global climate change, given the type and magnitude of all the pressures on water management in Europe and the characteristics of the different water management institutions involved. The objectives of the proposal are; 1. To undertake. through catchment case studies, reviews of the pressures facing water resources and water management in Europe, over the medium to long term, and their relative importance. These studies will involve simulation of future hydrological and water resources characteristics in the study catchments, focusing on the implications of uncertainty in these future pressures. 2. To identify a range of potentially appropriate water management strategies and evaluation procedures, suiting different institutional environments, which can cope with climate change and other pressures. 3. To present guidelines to water managers (at utility, national and European scale) on the assessment of medium and long-term strategies for water management in the context of uncertain climate change. 4. To consider explicitly the implications of climate change for the cooperative management of international river basins, through case studies. The project will evaluate and develop efficient and cost-effective ways of coping with climate change in water management in Europe; it is not concerned with predeveloping management tools per se. The project contains ten work packages, addressing strategies for adapting to climate change, methods to evaluate alternative strategies in the face of uncertainty, and the scenario requirements of water managers. The project will work through case studies which will assess the relative effects of different pressures on water resources and different areas of uncertainty. Water managers, at the basin, national and European scale, need information on how to cope with climate change: this project aims to provide that information and guidance. Prime Contractor: University of Southampton, Department of Geography; Southampton; UK.
