Polarimetric X-band radar: an innovative tool for hydro-meteorological research

Description: Das Projekt "Polarimetric X-band radar: an innovative tool for hydro-meteorological research" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPF), Institut d'Amenagement des Terres et des Eaux (IATE) durchgeführt. Weather radars are suitable tools to monitor precipitation characterized by a high spatial and temporal varibility. Dual-polarization Doppler (polarimetric) capabilities offer the opportunity to improve the remote sensing of precipitation, furthering our understanding of the microphysics of precipitation and reducing the uncertainties associated with radar rainfall estimation. For dedicated field campaigns, mobility is a definite advantage for instruments like weather radars. For compacity and cost efficiency, a polarimetric X-band radar appears to be the best approach. Such a radar system will allow us to address issues such as correction of radar measurements for attenuation, snowfall measurement, the analysis of the spatial and temporal structure of precipitation and multisensor estimation of precipitation. Moreover, the mobility of the instrument will make possible an easy deployment to different locations for a variety of experiments in which measuring precipitation is important for hydrological and water resources studies. In this way, the radar system will benefit the large community that needs accurate measurements of precipitation.
