Description: Das Projekt "Linking small-scale farmers to Markets - A Multi-Level Analysis with Special References to Malawi, Kenya and South Africa" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Hohenheim, Institut für Sozialwissenschaften des Agrarbereichs, Fachgebiet Landwirtschaftliche Kommunikations- und Beratungslehre durchgeführt. The agricultural sector in many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa is divided into two sub-sectors: On the one side there exist a large estate sub-sector with farmers cultivating large land holdings. On the other side there is the smallholder sub-sector with farmers operating mainly on a subsistence oriented level. There is still little scope for small-scale cash crop production as externalities as well as structural imperfections limit market participation. Smallholder farmers lack alternatives for additional farm income that could be integrated into their farm and family economy. Over the past years the strategy of developing countries consist of seeking for options to diversify the national agriculture in order to reduce the risk in the case of failure and to enable smallholder farmers further commercialisation of their farming systems. Within this context one possible approach is, to detect so called 'niche products' that fit into the local farming systems and that are demanded limited but steadily and securely on a market (local, regional, international). For this reason, to find a niche for such kind of products in the (national, regional, world) market, a profound analysis of the production and marketing conditions of the respective product is essential. This needs identification of production potentials, marketing potentials and determination and development of appropriate institutional arrangements and procedures to meet the requirements in the whole commodity chain. Objectives: This study discusses the role of the agricultural sector (with emphasis on the smallholder sub-sector) in the development process of Sub-Saharan Countries. In more detail, the objectives include: - to display the factors influencing smallholder farmers commercialisation in a multi-level complex; - to relate these influencing factors to the present economic and social conditions in Malawi, Kenya and South Africa; - to analyse the particular strategies of the selected countries to integrate small-scale farmers in economic activities; - to relate and benchmark these different approaches in the general scientific context of development approaches; - to discuss the future potentials of small-scale agriculture in the selected countries in the context of a poverty reduction strategy and as a concept to enhance economic development.
