Schnelles Warnsystem fuer Erdbeben im europaeischen Mittelmeerraum

Description: Das Projekt "Schnelles Warnsystem fuer Erdbeben im europaeischen Mittelmeerraum" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam, Aufgabenbereich 2 - Physik des Erdkörpers und Desasterforschung, Projektbereich 2.4. - Globale Seismologie durchgeführt. Objective: The project aims at improving the procedure currently in operation at the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre for rapidly locating significant earthquakes in the European-Mediterranean area, analysing their source mechanism, and providing this information to the relevant European authorities and the scientific community in a timely manner. General Information: To enhance the geographical coverage of short-period seismological stations transferring data in quasi-real-time by adding five new networks (Canary Islands, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Bulgaria and Romania) to the 16 European networks which already send their data to the EMSC in case of a large earthquake. To increase the number of seismological centres locating earthquakes in quasi-real-time. Automatic location software will be implemented at seismological centres in Edinburgh and Thessaloniki. This will improve the capacity of the EMSC to be alerted rapidly in case of a major earthquake and it will allow the EMSC to lower the threshold for triggering the alert system to magnitude 5.0 (it is currently set at 5.5). To carry out studies for defining a better propagation model for the European-Mediterranean region in order to enhance the accuracy of the location computed. This will be achieved by building regional propagation tables and by integrating automatic depth evaluation using a regional discretization of the European-Mediterranean area. To integrate the automatic computation of the scalar seismic moment and Mm magnitude. This magnitude will then be used as a reference magnitude in the alert messages disseminated to the users. To define and implement the appropriate software for fast moment tensor inversion of regional seismic events. To reduce the delay in computing the full moment tensor, automatic phase picking will be applied. Furthermore, the number of broad-band seismic stations contributing their data in real-time will be increased: one station in Spain, two in the Netherlands, one in the United Kingdom and two long-period stations in France will be made available. The main deliverable of this research project will consist of information messages sent out routinely and freely to all interested users following large earthquakes (magnitude greater than 5.0) occurring in the European-Mediterranean area. Within one hour, a first message will provide basic information on the earthquake location and magnitude. A second message will then give the complete description of the source mechanism of the event. Prime Contractor: Centre Sismologique Euro-Mediterraneen; Strasbourg; France.
